You will then visit to the National Museum, which holds artifacts dating back to the pre-Angkorian era. You will later stop at the hilltop Wat Phnom before glimpsing into the tragic recent history of Cambodia at Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum and the Killing Fields at Choeung Ek. Later today you will be able to search for bargains at the Russian Market.

Phnom Penh has been the capital of Cambodia since 1866 and although it suffered extensive damage during the Khmer Rouge era, the city still retains a rustic charm. Accompanied by an English-speaking local guide, you will tour the city to discover its ancient and recent past. Your tour begins at Cambodia’s Royal Palace, which stands prominently in the city center next to the river front area. Several buildings open to the public include the ‘Silver Pagoda’ whose floor is lined with solid silver tiles. You will then continue to the National Museum. Located in a fabulous old building, the Museum is filled with art and artifacts which date back to the pre-Angkorian era. At the north end of the city is the hilltop pagoda of Wat Phnom, for which the capital was named. Climb the stairs to the top of the hill for fabulous views of the city below. You will enjoy lunch this afternoon at a local restaurant where you can enjoy the Khmer food.

This afternoon, we will look into the country’s tragic recent history with a tour of Tuol Sleng Prison (S-21) and the Killing Fields at Choeung Ek, both of which are sobering reminders of the evils of the Khmer Rouge regime. Though a very tragic chapter in Cambodia’s recent history, visiting these monuments will provide you with an understanding in the development of this developing country. In between your visit to these two sites, you will have the opportunity to test your bargaining skills as you wander through the stalls of the “Russian Market” which is filled with souvenirs, local handicrafts, and electronic goods.
